Comparing Home Services Takes a Little Discipline, But It's Worth It

Most of us enjoy making an occasional impulse purchase, but there are certain times when such urges should definitely be resisted. One of those times is when you’re shopping for Internet, cable or satellite TV and telephone service providers. Any one of these providers might be offering an attractive “limited time only” deal, but you could get stuck with an unnecessarily high monthly bill if you simply follow your initial urges and don’t compare home services before you sign up.

Following familiar habits is human nature, but neglecting to explore outside your comfort zone can actually cost you money. When moving from one residence to another, for example, most people simply contact their various service providers and have the services they’ve had all along transferred to the new address. This would be an excellent opportunity to ask about ways to improve service and save money. But you don’t have to move to take advantage of this strategy. You can compare home services today and start enjoying any or all of the benefits outlined below.

Four reasons to compare home services:

1. Save Money

This is the most obvious reason to become a savvy, educated shopper. With few exceptions, there is simply no good reason to pay more than you have to for home services. When you comparison shop, you’ll learn what other providers are charging and possibly renegotiate new, more favorable terms with your existing provider. You can even tell them that you’re going to sign up with their competitor for a better deal. In many cases, they’ll offer you even more favorable terms to keep your business.

2. Learn About New Services

Telephone, satellite, cable and Internet technology are always advancing. We all benefit from this forward movement by taking advantage of added or enhanced services and lower prices for existing services. Comparing home services is sometimes the only way to learn of new services or improvements you may not have been aware of.

3. Take Advantage Of Bundling

Another money-saving opportunity that has been made possible through advancements in technology is bundling, where the same supplier offers two or more services at a reduced rate, usually much lower than if you paid for each service individually. But you can’t take advantage of something you don’t know about. Comparing home services is a simple way to find out what’s available to you.

4. Ask About Specials

Many providers offer occasional special deals that can save you even more money, or bring you services you wouldn’t otherwise have. For example, some satellite and cable TV services will give customers free subscriptions for premium channels for a specified time period in exchange for committing to another year of service.

As you can see, comparing home services when you move (or any other time) is almost like a treasure hunt – you never know what you’ll find, and you're free to sign up for just the services you want at the best prices you can find. In other words, getting out of your comfort zone can make your life a little better while allowing you keep more of your own money.

  • Has on-demand services, such as movies, TV series and special event programming

  • Parental control options

Analog Cable

  • Available in some places where digital cable isn't
  • Less expensive than digital
  • Fewer available channels than digital cable
  • Sometimes has "ghosting" caused by fluctuations in the signal
